If you would like to explore a little, here are some points of interest near the workshop's facilities.

Campus Features

  • Ackland Museum - Very conveniently located between Hill Hall and Granville Towers, the museum's collection includes: over 15,000 objects; art of Africa, Europe, and America; works from ancient times to the 21st century; the most significant collection of Asian art in the state; one of the largest collections of works on paper in the Southeast. Known for its strength in European painting and sculpture, the Ackland has more recently been building its collection of twentieth-century and contemporary art.
  • Morehead Planetarium -- One of the largest planetariums in the United States is just across McCorkle Place from Hill Hall.
  • Coker Arboretum - Just a stone's throw from the workshop, our Arboretum is a lovely place for a walk. It features diverse plants and even a running stream. It's managed by the North Carolina Botanical Garden, which has more than one garden in the area.
  • McCorkle Place - The original "quad" of UNC-CH is adjacent to Hill Hall and other workshop buildings. University landmarks Silent Sam, Caldwell Memorial, and Davie Poplar are there.
  • Rose garden - A large rose garden surrounds the Planetarium's very large sundial. The garden and sundial are between the Morehead Planetarium building and Franklin Street.
  • North Carolina Collection - A short walk across campus, the main gallery is on the second floor of the Wilson Library building, which is at the end of the Polk Place quad; the same building houses the main music library. The gallery includes the Sir Walter Raleigh Rooms; the Early Carolina Rooms; and a nineteenth-century plantation library. Other exhibits include 1580s Roanoke Island's settlement; rare ornithological prints; memorials to Thomas Wolfe and John Sprunt Hill; and more.
  • Campus Landmarks - the University Visitor's Center has compiled a nice list of campus features, including the famous Old Well. Intended for incoming freshmen, it's a nice overview in a single page. Many of the features are very near the workshop location.
  • Virtual Tour - compiled by the Visitor's Center, this gives historical background and other details about campus features. The tour starts with the Alumni Center, but follow the links on the left to see interesting entries about the arboretum, Davie Poplar, Morehead Planetarium, the Old Well, and even Person Hall (which hosts some workshop sessions).

Dining Highlights

Meals at Granville Towers' cafeteria are included in the room and board fees for the workshop, but sometimes workshop participants want to dine elsewhere. The Chapel Hill / Orange County Visitors Bureau compiles a sizable database of local restaurants.

The workshop area is adjacent to Franklin Street, the main street running through downtown Chapel Hill. You can find a wide variety of restaurants nearby just by walking around downtown. There are many nearby that cater to student tastes and budgets, but if you're interested in something a little different from typical student fare, here are some ideas (also see our interactive map):

  • Top of the Hill - They strive to be "a dining and social experience...intrinsically linked to Chapel Hill and Franklin Street" with their own microbrewery and a third-story view over downtown Chapel Hill.
adjacent to campus at the corner of Franklin & Columbia Streets
  • Carolina Crossroads at the Carolina Inn - "joins the graceful traditions of the South with progressive new American cuisine to create one of the finest dining experiences in town."
adjacent to campus at the corner of Columbia St. & Cameron Ave.
  • 411 West - "seasonal fresh pastas, wood-fired pizzas, fresh seafood, steaks, and specials inspired by the flavors of Italy and the Mediterranean"
west [left] on Franklin St. about 2 blocks
  • Lantern - "simple, authentic Asian food with the freshest available Ingredients"
west [left] on Franklin St. about 2 blocks, next to 411 West

extra-healthy / vegetarian-friendly (a short drive away):

  • Carrburritos - the best in casual, fresh Mexican dining
in Carrboro; west on Rosemary Street
  • Panzanella Italian Restaurant - "Carrboro's Community-Owned Italian Eatery," part of Carrboro's co-op grocery, often features locally-grown items
in Carrboro; west on Franklin St., which becomes Carrboro's Main Street; look to the right for the lawn in front of Weaver St. Market, then walk around back into the west end of Carr Mill Mall for Panzanella (the market has a cafeteria in addition).
  • Sage Vegetarian Restaurant - Mediterranean, Italian, and Persian specialties; lasagna a specialty
in Timberlyne Shopping Center, in the northern part of Chapel Hill
